How To Maintain Motivation when you just don’t feel like it

Motivation can be a very fragile thing

Some days, I wake up feeling full of motivation.

Some days I don’t!

On the days when I do feel motivated and can’t wait to get started, sometimes something happens – maybe my computer plays up or I have to deal with something pressing.

By the time I’m ready to start, I just don’t feel like it any more.

Other days, I wake up feeling a bit down, and don’t even feel like starting.

OK, I know I need to work.

I know what I need to do.

I have my ‘To Do’ list beside me, and my long-term plan  to refer to.

But somehow, I just can’t be bothered.

It all seems so far away.

I haven’t lost belief – I’m just not sure how much today really matters.

It’s only one day. It’ll be easy enough to catch up.

I need a break!

So how do I motivate myself today, right now?

I have a few techniques I can use that always help.

Firstly, I always have my favourite motivational quotes around me.

Some people pin their favourites to a wall, or a board.

Others write them on sticky notes and stick them to their desk, or their screen. I don’t believe it matters how, but it matters that I surround myself with my motivations.

Here are just a couple that work for me.

I like to feel that I have made at least a little progress every day, and I believe absolutely in the power of perseverance, but fundamentally, none of that matters if I lose sight of why I started.

Motivationn and Progress

motivation, perseverance

But there are hundreds of motivational quotes out there.

A simple Google search will reveal lots of them.

Just remember that motivation is a very personal thing.

Surround yourself with any old quotes, and it really won’t do much good, but there will be some that work for you.

You just need to go and look for them.

And there really is no doubt that if you surround yourself with positivity (to be honest, I’m not sure that’s actually a word, but never mind), then it is easier to feel positive, and to motivate yourself to do the things you need to so.

Enter your details on the form to the right to follow my journey to success and to learn how you can get (and keep) the winning mindset.

The reason you started is the best motivation

Whatever the reason you started (and we all have different ones), it was powerful enough for you to take the first step.

And that first step is the hardest of all.

Hi Carl, great post and a real reminder to look at your basic principles when you get stuck somewhere. I’ve always been a great fan of positive affirmations, from my early work life I had some really great pictures put up in my office that are both great quotes and visually encouraging. I think it’s important to keep yourself looking forwards and if that comes in quotes and visual images then that’s what you should surround yourself with to give you a bit of encouragement when you need it.

    Enjoy the journey!
